Week 2 - Jumpology & Shutter Speeds

Composition & reading of a photograph; Jumpology, Capturing vehicles / people in motion, shutter speed, camera handling.

Jumpology
We learnt that Phillippe Halsman was the master of jumpology, capturing dramatic black and white photos of performers, actors and celebrities jumping in the air.
In order to take successful photos featuring Jumpology, we needed to adjust the shutter speed to around 1/6000-1/8000 seconds.
We used the angle of 50mm or 24mm to get the background into photo as well as keeping the focus.

Camera Handling & Slow Shutter Speeds
For our next exercise, we had to use a different lens angle of 85mm, and set the shutter speed to 1/125 sec or 1/60sec. We stood at the side of a busy motorway and tried to capture the side windows of the cars moving, in order to see the people inside of the car. The purpose of this task was to capture people driving, when they are most in their own personal sphere.
