Week 1 Readings - Short History of Photography.

Short History of Photography

Through a short powerpoint in class, we learnt about the history of Photography and the development of photography over time.
It was interesting to find out the many different relationships that Photography has with other areas, such as technology, magic, life and death, philosophy, computing, politics, science, travel and architecture.
Although these are all very different areas, we can see how Photography interacts with every sector, creating complex relationships that Photography plays an integral part in.

We were also introduced into some theory of Photography, such as Roland Barthes Camera Lucida and The Social Ontology of Photography that explores the awkward relationship between photography and the truth.

Melvyn Bragg - The Invention of Photography. In this video, Bragg talks about the impact photography has had over the years, specifically its impact in the 1800s. This was an interesting video to listen to as it made me realise the long existence of photography and how it has developed to get where it is now.
